Define GIS 📗

The first thing you need to do when deciding if a degree in gis is right for you is to define GIS. Some places define GIS as geographic information science or geographic information systems. This can greatly help with understanding what kind of degree you'll be getting. Also be aware that GIS lands in different fields. Some universities consider it part of their STEM education while some classify it as part of the humanities.

Is a degree in GIS right for me?🌴

That depends on what you are interested in. If you are curious about the tech, making maps, visualizing data ect it might be right for you, but if you are looking for GIS as a means to a career say in forestry, you need to keep that mind as you earn your degree. Is your reason for a degree in GIS to use it as a stepping stone? Applications and techniques can always be added on later.

Tools or Theory? 🪛

One more consideration is what your degree is in. As technology advances and more software takes center stage, it's often easy to fall into learning software over learning theory. Be sure that as you earn your degree, that you are taking stock of what you are learning.
